Info slide: There is currently a shortage of teachers in NSW. For the purpose of this debate, there are two main policy options for increasing the numbers of available teachers. The ‘new teacher’ approach involves incentivising current students to become teachers, e.g. by lowering the entry ATAR to teaching courses, providing scholarships to prospective teaching students. The ‘retraining’ approach involves incentivising people who are currently employed in other professions to retrain as teachers, e.g. by paying them to take postgraduate teaching courses, marketing teaching careers to current professionals.
